Rob Ford’s casino: build it first, maybe consider the facts afterward

 Posted on March 16th, 2013

Ford brilliance on display yet again:

“They’re saying (the city’s revenue) is going to be $100 million, $150 million, $200 million — we’ll see,” Ford said. “I want to get (a casino) first and then we can talk about proposal second.”

On Sunday, St. Patrick’s Day, Rob Ford phoned in to his own radio show and clearly told his caregiver brother Douggie that there were (and I quote) “hundreds of thousands of people” on Yonge Street and at City Hall for the parade. That’s right, that’s exactly what I heard: “hundreds of thousands of people”. Who did the count? Who estimated the crowd? Is it even remotely possible that on a cold, March day, “hundreds of thousands of people” would throng the streets of Toronto to celebrate a social anachronism? A photo that ran in The Globe the next day showed a middle-aged lepchrachuan handing out candies to an exclusively Asian group that looked slightly confused at the festivities, maybe 50 people in that little uncrowded grouping on Yonge Street. “hundreds of thousands of people”? Is that anything like the “thousands” of jobs coming to Toronto because of a slightly shady trip to Chicago on Robert Deluce’s dime? Are the jobs there yet? Please advise.

Not that I’ve heard, Daniel. Sarah and I and mild hangovers can attest to the fact that at least two pubs were well-peopled over the St. Patrick’s Day weekend, but the parade I didn’t attend. I also don’t attend Ford’s Fantasyland where visiting Chicago magically means jobs for Toronto (his visit was a yawner in Chicago news, if it appeared at all). Oh, and then there’s the one about how the private sector will, through it’s magnanimity, improve everyone’s lives if given free reign. Have you heard it? Its a knee-slapper.
