Mark Cidade, future mayor of Toronto

 Posted on June 11th, 2012

Normally I wouldn’t pay much mind to people like Mark Cidade, but since he has vowed to run for mayor in 2014, having withdrawn his 2010 bid, and since he decided to get into scraps on Facebook on a variety of topics ranging from poverty to health, I thought it’d be a good idea to preserve some of his insights here for posterity. When the 2014 election rolls around, I sure do hope these are dug up again. And no, none of them are taken out of context.

On why the poor don’t eat home-cooked meals

They have the ability. They just lazy!

So they are cooking-disabled? Is that a thing now all of a sudden? What’s the cure—more drugs?

On why people are poor

Everyone is responsible for their own actions but they are too weak to withstand temptation otherwise they wouldn’t be in that mess. None of them would be.

There are plenty of job opportunities but a lot of these people simply don’t want to work.

On mental health disorders

If you leave someone to their own devices, all symptoms vanish eventually.

On disability benefits

I was a trustee for a client who was on ODSP and this guy would not get his act together! People need role models not incentives.

[someone replied that “things are not that black and white”]

He was brown!

On cancer, AIDS, multiple sclerosis, and depression

Cancer, AIDS, and MS all go away with proper lifestyle choices.

[A stress-free lifestyle is] one of many cures. Not everyone is willing to be un-stressed, unfortunately. I cured my depression. It’s also stress and food related.

On the 2014 election

You don’t know who I am but I’m the next fucking mayor of this city, bitches!

On not winning the 2010 election

I LET him [Rob Ford] win the 2010 election to teach this city a lesson. Everything HE says is by de facto WRONG.

[posted on July 9, 2010] As of today I am officially out of the race—I withdrew my nomination due to health issues.

On Rob Ford

As Robert Ford steps down from his meat scale, women everywhere need to step up and work out!

On Giorgio Mammoliti’s single mother/casino comment

A single Mammy stands up for all single Mommies! Way to go, Georgio. Why don’t we build the casino on the Scarborough bluffs so they can throw their babies off it when some card counter causes a round of lay-offs?

On being accused of rape

People are saying blatantly slanderous things about me while no one says a peep. Would someone please defend me?

On women

Women are people, not objects! Sexy people. That play with sex objects….zzzzzzzzZZZZZZΩΩΩΩΩΩΩΩΩΩΩΩʒʒʒʒʒʒʒʒʒʒʒɟɟɟɟɟɟɟɟɟɟɟɟɟɟɟɟɟɟɟɟɟɟɟɟɟɟɟɟɟɟ少林少林少林少林少林少林少林少林少林少林少林少林少林

* the photo at the top of this post isn’t exactly the most recent, but given the general tone of Mark’s comments, it seemed the most appropriate.

Dude! They are SOOOoo taken out of context.

No they’re not, Mark. In fact, anyone’s welcome to follow the links to see exactly how in context they are. But you maybe you don’t want people to verify for themselves — is that why you changed your Facebook name?

  • Mark Cidade
    June 14th, 2012 6:43 am

No, I change my Facebook name on a regular basis, for FUN. In fact, everything you quoted was said for FUN and not for serious.

I don’t expect everyone to cook their own meals. *I* don’t even do that. I do expect the City to help citizens, au gratis, to teach them to cook, buy food within a budget, and also agriculture. Toronto used to be full of farms.

I myself am impoverished because I can’t resist the temptation to give my money away to those who say they need it. I myself don’t take advantage of the ample opportunities out there because, frankly, they all suck. The City needs to provide better jobs that people will actually want to do.

People know how to treat their own mental illnesses better than doctors. Psychiatrists should just prescribe what is asked and maybe give advice but they shouldn’t dictate what I should do with my brain nor should they call me names that end with “disorder”.

I can make brown-people jokes because I AM BROWN. My father is of Morrocan descent.

You forgot to mention HOW lifestyle choices cure all ills—the context for that was in the rest of the thread.

The “next fucking mayor of this city, bitches!” was in response to when Rob Ford told the 911 operator that he was the fuckin’ mayor. CONTEXT!

I used my depression as an excuse to drop out of the election but if I wanted to I could have stayed in the race and won. I *was* the most popular candidate on Twitter.

The meat scale quote was for an ad for my friend’s product. My friend is a female entrepaneur.

I don’t see the signifcance of my casino quote…?

No one accused me of rape.

Do you even know what “zZΩʒɟ林” means? It denotes IRONY.

Your comments are here, as is your Facebook page (if anyone can find it), and available for anyone to read and judge for themselves. It’s curious to note that your descent seems to change whenever it’s expedient to whatever you’re defending at the moment. I’m not saying you’re lying, merely that you focus on certain parts of your past (not to mention name dropping), to puff up whatever it is that you’re arguing at the moment. That goes for both your own past and that of your family.
And in regards to arguing, I never once got the impression that you were doing it just for shits and giggles, and neither did my girlfriend with whom you engaged in one such argument. That “curing of all ills” argument is specifically the one I’m referring to, and my girlfriend has one of the ills you mention, which is what makes your advice especially egregious. I’m glad you were able to deal with your own depression, but claiming that you can cure illnesses like AIDS or MS through lifestyle or dietary changes is absurd. Symptoms can be lessened to a great degree and quality of life improved, but this isn’t a cure — there’s a huge difference.
To claim that psychiatrists should simply prescribe whatever they’re told to is equally dangerous and myopic. While I agree that the medical community needs to greatly revise how it deals with patients (including listening to them), you would have people like drug addicts dictating what drugs doctors should be prescribing to them. Do you see the problem with this?
The casino quote was simply an example of your response to current events — an indication of where your head is at. I’ve written about Mammoliti’s casino plans myself but I never suggested that single mothers would be tossing their infants off of cliffs once they were out of a job. I understand that it was supposed to be a joke, but it’s just not funny and it’s poorly thought-out commentary by someone who fashions themselves as a mayoral candidate. It’s the kind of thing Rob Ford might say, though even he might find it off-colour.
About the rape comment, I read the thread on that one and that was certainly the impression I was left with. There were plenty of replies encouraging you to keep your chin up and stay the course. I have absolutely no idea where it all came from and there was no additional explanation. Again, you’re free to comment and explain what happened there.
And that final IRONY of yours — really? If anything I would’ve said this was just another bad joke exemplifying a sense of poor judgement, but irony?
In any event, the fact that you have decided to run for mayor puts your remarks up for public scrutiny. I’m not suggesting that having a sense of humour is a bad thing but I never got the sense that most of your comments were supposed to be funny — and I spent plenty of time reading entire threads specifically to see what the context was. It’s not my intention to dwell on this and as the 2014 election rolls around I’ll be digging up other candidates’ statements as well. Rest assured that if I find commentary like yours elsewhere I’ll give it equal attention.

  • Mark Cidade
    June 26th, 2012 10:16 pm

The bulk of my comments here and elsewhere are primarily for comedy purposes and are not intended for anyone to necessarily use as a basis for some kind of judgement. The appropriate context regardless would have to take into account that I am a Discordian and all that entails.

As for my ancestry, most of what I claim is proposed as a hypothesis. I don’t know my great great great grandfather from Y-chromosomal Adam aside from obvious phenotypal traits. My intent is to show that we’re all distant cousins and we all share a genetic heritage.

I understand that it sounds absurd that lifestyle and diet can cure whatever and pragmatically, no it can’t for various reasons. But physiologically, it is possible and isn’t as far-fetched as it sounds. I would never suggest that anyone just do whatever they suspect is the right thing for them if they aren’t well-informed. That’s the key: education. Drug addicts undergoing treatment are safely assumed to want help unless they are treated by some kind of force. If they are told what is what in terms of symptoms and pharmacology so that they understand what’s going on, they would be in the best position to determine their own path to sobriety.

What I said about single mothers and casinos was in the spirit of Swift’s modest proposal. My emphasis was on the juxtaposition of a single mom’s predicament and the uncertainty of working at a casino.

The rape accusation comment was on my personal Facebook profile and I don’t expect outsiders to understand what that’s about. The thread was intentionally lacking in sufficient context. Again, it was for comedy purposes. Yes, I have a twisted sense of humour.

Mayhap I’m using the word “irony” in an ironic way or I’m pulling an Allanis Morisette here. Who knows!

If you do find someone else’s commentary that resembles mine please do them a favour and ASK THEM what they meant! You might be surprised. Hell, THEY might be surprised that anyone would even take them that seriously.

For the record, my bid for the mayor’s seat *is* serious, as is my intent to fulfill the role. But I’m going to win this thing MY WAY. Which is OUR WAY. The City of Toronto was built on a foundation of cacaphony, discord, discourse, and mutual revelation. And laughs. Lots of laughs : )

Not to worry, he will already be processed through the legal system. If u would like the court date and address I can find out by asking the witnesses. Would u like that Sarah?

  • Mark Cidade
    April 24th, 2013 10:42 am

CHris P’s real name is Keeshan. He is my ex-wife’s roomate’s boyfriend. Toronto Police Services is aware of his slander and they have advised me to leave him alone. I hope he gave you the evidence you requested because I too would like to know how I am a pedophile. I don’t even like children. Their genitals are underdeveloped and I take no interest in immature things. Seriously guys.

  • Mark Cidade
    April 24th, 2013 12:04 pm

And Keeshan is a legitimate serial killer. I will give you the date and location of his trial this winter. Honest to God!

  • Mark Cidade
    April 24th, 2013 12:07 pm

If you want the court date and location for my divorce, which is what he is referring to, then it’s court room 505 at College Park on July 12. CIDADE V. CIDADE. I am divorcing my wife because she had sex with Keeshan. And I am taking full custody of my daughter, Noorani. So there.

  • Patrick
    April 25th, 2013 11:03 am

    Mark,

I’m genuinely sorry to hear that you’re going through this; divorce is not a happy time for anyone involved, and when there are kids involved it makes it all the more difficult.

I’m not in a position to verify any of your statements or those of Chris P’s, so it wouldn’t be wise for me to get in the middle of this, but despite any earlier comments I’ve made, I sincerely wish that everything works out positively for you and your family, and that justice and truth prevail.

    Best of luck!

Oh my gosh, Mark! I cannot imagine your experience! :'(

Like Patrick I feel awful about it and hope you come out on top.

Slander and defamation is cruel and unfortunate. So sorry you are going through this, hun.
    Please take care, k?

It’s okay, guys. If Rob Ford can hack it, I can hack it triply so : )

  • Monika G.
    September 9th, 2013 10:30 am

So… what I see here is some jealous, greyface jackass trying to slander someone who intends to make a positive difference in Toronto politics.

Everything IS taken out of context–there are no screenshots supporting that ANY of this was actually posted anywhere on the internet.

Way to write a terrible article with no merit. This is nothing short of a journalistic abortion.

  • Patrick
    September 9th, 2013 12:28 pm

If you care to read on, Monika, you’ll note that Mark has pretty much admitted to making these ill-advised comments, and besides, everything here is a direct quote from Mark’s own Facebook page — I don’t make anything up, I only quote.

About screenshots, with Ford’s ongoing criminal activity we have seen that his supporters will deny everything, even photographic evidence, a slew of first-person witnesses, etc. Your own rabid comments suggest exactly the same mentality. Facebook posts are much easier to fake than photos — taking a screenshot proves nothing except that your lack of understanding of this.

I’ve had Ford’s camp contact me about my material, and only once did I have to add a clarification that nothing was substantially proven. I’m very careful with not only what I write, but also how I write it. Of course I have a very clear opinion that I readily share, but that opinion is based on solid facts and evidence.

Living in reality — it’s a real trip for some people.

  • Mark Cidade
    September 9th, 2013 10:37 am

Although I may be able to hack it, I don’t know if my ex-wife would and now that legal proceedings have commenced, I was wondering if you could delete the comments mentioning her, and especially the ones where he mentions my stepdaughter, Noorani. She doesn’t need to have this in her digital search history as she grows up.

I wouldn’t mind this whole article losing its top Google ranking for my name, either. I’m going to have to deal with enough flack by the public and the press next year. Yes, I said some things I most certainly shouldn’t have, for political reasons, but I now want to start off with a relatively clean slate. As much as I’d like to keep things light-hearted, I’ve learned that things have to start to be pretty serious from now on if anything I say will be taken into sufficient consideration.

Also, my mom is learning how to Google. I don’t want her to see that my ex-wife’s boyfriend is calling me a pedophile and stuff, or that I made disrespectful jokes about people. She wouldn’t understand. Sorry, mommy!

  • Mark Cidade
    September 9th, 2013 10:59 pm

The comments I made were not ill-advised. No one advised me to say anything of the sort!

  • Monika G.
    September 9th, 2013 11:13 pm

Aww, how cute. You continue to try to claim your slander is valid, yet you still provide zero actual proof other than your “word” which I doubt anyone is going to believe.

You’re acting like a freshman college student who got an automatic fail for academic dishonesty–and miraculously, you fail to realize what’s wrong.

From what I can gather, you’re a terrible writer trying to sneak in some sensationalist hype garbage that people are going to read once (if they can get past the fact that there are no screenshots, no timestamps, and no other markings that might suggest your quotes are any kind of verifiable) and dismiss.

If you’re itching for more of a bitching, I will gladly scratch something out for you.

I will end with a horrible pun because I think you are terrible: Are you a mosquito? Because you sure do suck.

  • Patrick
    September 10th, 2013 9:39 am

If you don’t see anything backing up my claims, Monika, may I suggest taking some courses in English reading comprehension. This posting isn’t “my word”, they are factual quotes made personally by Mark. You can also refer to Mark’s own comments here regarding the veracity of what I’ve written. I also explain why I’ve concentrated more on Mark than on other candidates — would you like me to enlighten you on some of the other shit he’s said publicly over the years? I further suggest that you talk to Mark directly about why he subsequently decided to remove the postings I quoted — Facebook will confirm this if you follow the links.

Clearly he posted NOTHING that he’s now regretting, right?

Furthermore, Mark initiated this because he just can’t seem to keep his off-colour comments to himself and decided to directly pick on my fiancee and her illness. In fact, he can’t seem to keep his shit to himself under most circumstances, and on top of insisting on making it public also opens himself to further scrutiny by running for mayor. Perhaps you’d like to speak with Sarah about what kind of person you’re defending? Would you like to discuss why it’s important that such comments — by MAYORAL CANDIDATES — are worthy of exposure and debate?

Beyond this, I have nothing further to say to assuage your self-imposed ignorance.

  • Mark Cidade
    September 11th, 2013 12:50 am

I can keep my comments, both on- and off-color, to myself and I often do. I don’t think I removed anything that you quoted. Others may have done so. I don’t remember targeting Sarah nor do I know with what she is afflicted. But I am sorry for being an ass then.

At any rate, what I said in the past was—again—NOT for serious, and I was not speaking as a mayoral candidate. And it’s not so much that I regret what I said, (though I admit some of it was kind of dumb) but rather my opinions and choice of words are different now than they were then. It doesn’t make much sense to use all that from the past against me. On what you quoted me above isn’t something I would say now, for whatever reason. I’d rather be evaluated for the ideas I have now and what I currently have to say about them. I got most of the shits and giggles out of my system. Next election is a pretty serious thing and I intend to be a pretty serious guy about it. Yeah, I’ll still try to keep it light when I can but I should hope more tactfully.

  • Patrick
    September 11th, 2013 1:58 pm

Here’s the thing, Mark…I really don’t like to take stuff down, and then only under pretty extreme conditions or legal demands. However, I see your dilemma so let me offer you this: a rebuttal / explanation / whatever-you-want-it-to-say letter that I will insert at the top of the post with a note explaining what it is, when it was added, etc. Since the post isn’t that long, I think that 4 to 5 medium-sized paragraphs should be about the maximum. Please email it to patrick@torontocitylife.com whenever you’re ready.

    How does that sound?

  • Monika G.
    September 11th, 2013 1:50 am

I don’t think I am the one in need of reading comprehension courses. You are still failing to provide proof. Just because you say something happened does not mean it really did, and your lack of hard evidence completely discredits your remarks.

To put it bluntly, you’ve acted as nothing more than an ignorant, slandering asshole.

If you want, I can translate everything I have said into monosyllabic words if it will do anything to help you understand how thick-skulled you’re acting.

I am impressed that you can find very basic information on people via social media. Congrats! Must have been hard, seeing as it took you quite a while to do.

Next, you can learn how to take a screenshot! And maybe even open it in paint and crop it so your entire screen doesn’t get saved.

Your “offer” to Mark makes you sound like even more of a douchebag, by the way. :)
